about

Originally, maqam is a technique of improvisation defined by traditional scales and the melodic development in a piece of Arabian art music. Philipp's "maqamat électriques" are improvisations based on modern symmetric modes and additive rhythm. The sound of the electric guitar is transformed by the interaction of effect pedals and live looping. In a live situation, these pieces are a perfect complement to Philipp's guitar compositions like those on the album "Sonne 4".

The cover photo - taken by Philipp in 2012 - shows a small part of the wall of skulls at Beinhaus Leuk, built from over 20.000 skulls and femurs between 1504 and 1506 AD.
