about

The first ever so-called ambient recording was a tape-loop-based music composition in four parts by Brian Eno, released in 1978. It was named Ambient 1 – Music for Airports, although it was “…environmental music suited to a wide variety of moods and atmospheres.” and “…intended to induce calm and space to think.” (Brian Eno).
With my own Music for Airport I wanted to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Eno’s record, honoring its original ideas by taking them even further. By playing some of my own loop-based compositions and improvisations live at an actual airport. By including the actual ambient noise of the airport’s Arrivals and Baggage Claim area in the recording: Trolley bags rattling past, cellphones ringing, people talking, loudspeaker announcements and squealing conveyor belts becoming part of the mix. Indeed, part of the music, as defined by the great John Cage: “Everything we do is music.”
To welcome hundreds of people arriving at their home base or at their tourist destination San Antonio was a great experience for me as a foreigner, and it was part of my concert tour through the south western USA in the fall of 2023.
